Mass Exodus

Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims fled to neighboring Bangladesh after violence erupted in Myanmar’s Rakhine state in August, 2017. The exodus was sparked by a fierce military response to Rohingya militant attacks.

In the early days of the crisis, the story was about people fleeing for their lives.

I thought it would be a good idea to show these huge numbers as human beings, not pieces of data marked on a chart.

We used 3D software to create a crowd model and manage exact head counts. These images were linked to a data-driven timeline that walked the reader through the rapidly expanding exodus. Comparisons also emphasized the desperate state of people living in makeshift camps in Bangladesh.
